Marzocco lions by Donatello, Loggia della Signoria, Florence

The Marzocco, or Lion, was Florence's traditional heraldic symbol. Captured prisoners were traditionally obliged to kiss its posterior. The statue was originally carved for a papal apartment in the church of Santa Maria Novella and moved to the piazza in 1812.
